History at High Noon

February 21

Our Friday, February 21st History at High Noon Program will be by Philip Hall and is titled: “From Wounded Knee to the Gallows: the Life and Trials of Lakota Chief Two Sticks.”

The story of the Lakota chief Can Nopa Uhah, Two Sticks, who was wrongfully accused of murdering four white cowboys and hung in 1894 in Deadwood. Uses government records, newspaper accounts, and unpublished manuscripts to give a clear and candid account of the Oglala’s struggles in the events leading up to and in the wake of Wounded Knee.

About Philip Hall
He obtained a Ph.D. in 1972 from the University of Montana and spent a forty-year career attempting to meet the needs of children with debilitating learning and/or behavior problems. He was also an academic who directed school psychology training programs that helped graduate students become competent school psychologists. In the process, he wrote a book for teachers facing the challenge of meeting the needs of children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder and a book for parents rearing children with that disorder. He consulted with school districts in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. He has also been a featured presenter at conferences in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Toronto, Ontario, and in the United States from Arlington, VA and Boston, MA. to Los Angeles, CA.

As a hobby, he has written three books about the history of southwestern South Dakota, the latest one being From Wounded Knee to the Gallows: The Life and Trials of Lakota Chief Two Strikes, published May 2020 by the University of Oklahoma Press. He currently is in the final stages of polishing a manuscript, The History of the White River Badlands.

This program will be held in the Community Room of the Sturgis Public Library at 12:00 noon. One and all are invited to these free programs about the people and places we call home.
